Overview:
One of the worlds largest truck production plants with Europe’s most advanced assembly lines, producing 88 trucks a day switched to Steelgard RP Grease to protect against corrosion and saw significant operational improvements within hours. The manufacturer, has operations in the UK, Europe and US, producing a large range of trucks from small flatbeds, to cement mixers, skip hire trucks and 18 wheel fully refrigerated lorries.
Operators on the assembly lines were applying a corrosion preventative to the coupling flange between the gearbox and drive shaft as well as all coupling brackets holding exterior fuel tanks and storage boxes. The previous corrosion preventative was liquid based and was dripping off within seconds of application. The next process in the assembly line is to test the trucks on a multi-million-pound rolling road. The previous corrosion preventative was consequently dripping onto the rolling road, setting and causing the rollers to seize, stopping full production in a plant, which employs over 1000 people.
Vapor-Tek were contacted to assist and provide a solution that would protect the trucks components for there service life of over 15 years as well as maintaining continuous production on their assembly lines.
Vapor-Tek identified clear objectives to optimise corrosion prevention and operational efficiency at the manufacturing plant:
- Protect the trucks metallic components for over 15 years.
- Provide a suitable product to apply to 88 trucks a day.
- Reduce downtime on the assembly line.
Outcome:
Vapor-Tek’s Commercial Manager, Colin Jones visited the site and conducted a full site survey. After speaking to the operators, engineers and considering the unique operation requirements, Colin recommend Steelgard RP Grease. Heavy duty corrosion inhibitor Steelgard RP Grease is a high-performance corrosion inhibitor and rust preventative grease with thixotropic and pseudoplastic properties, which can be pumped cold, stay in place, lubricates, dewaters, inhibits rust, galvanic corrosion and crevice corrosion.
After conducting the site survey and recommending Steelgard RP Grease, Colin returned to the production plant the same week to start and assist the operators with the trial. The corrosion preventative was easily and quickly applied by brush within seconds to the exposed components. The thickness of Steelgard RP Grease meant it stayed in place, with no drop off. The trucks vital components were protected against corrosion and production continued without fault with the rolling road not being affected by the previous assembly process.
